Knowing what type of flooring is being cleaned is the first step to cleaning it the right way. Each type of flooring comes with their own practices to clean. So, find out what flooring you are dealing with before dumping cleaning products on it. There are more than just hardwood, laminate, and tile flooring but these three have some interesting similarities on what can and cannot go on them to clean it. Not only can the flooring you choose have an effect on the value of the building, but how you choose to clean it will affect the lasting life of the flooring. Knowing the importance of maintaining a clean floor let’s get down and dirty with the tips to help clean it.
Have you ever noticed how fancy some floors get trying to imitate hardwood flooring? Hardwood flooring is delicate to clean to begin with because you cannot use water, vinegar, soap-based cleaners, wax or steam. Such cleaners can dull the finish of the wood over time and anything that is going to put excessive water on the floor is going to damage it. Flooring that is made to look like hardwood floors can be just as tough and require just as much care, if not more to keep the illusion of hardwood alive.
Instead of using a wet mop, a hardwood floor needs dusting with a microfiber mop or cloth so the surface is less likely to be damaged. Feel the static cling up the handle as the microfiber traps the dirt and household allergens while avoiding lifting the mop off the floor to keep it all trapped. When using water to get out the tough spots a light mist can do the trick. Polish every 2-3 months.
The flooring of an establishment can add to the beauty of the structure or take away from it. Laminate floors, like hardwood, cannot tolerate any significant amount of water on them. Place furniture pads under all legs to protect from scratching off the protective layer of laminate. Stay away from Murphy’s oil because it leaves major streaks, vinegar is heavily debated because in abundance it can remove the protective layer. Steam moping occasional is great for a very deep clean but like anything if it is done daily it can cause the laminate to buckle. Sweep often, for hard to reach dust use a soft brush vacuum and clean with a damp mop using very hot water and a couple drops of dish soap.
Tiling is a durable option for flooring and to clean it requires sweeping and mopping with a mild detergent. To help protect the grout make sure not to soak the floors with a sponge mop because it presses the dirt into the grouting, making it dull. Instead wipe the flooring down lightly and avoid any abrasive cleaners.
